Falcons may be among the smaller birds of prey, but they are some of the fastest in the world, with Peregrine Falcons holding the record at speeds of up to 242 miles per hour! The colorful American Kestrel is our most common falcon and is often seen perched on wires or hovering like a hummingbird over open fields. Prairie Falcons are most often found in Utah’s rocky desert landscapes, while Merlins are winter visitors, frequently spotted near wooded areas or water as they chase small birds.
